Set up a "potty" schedule.
Regular visits to the potty area will increase the
likelihood of your puppy going in the right spot. |
 |
Know your puppy's whereabouts at all time.
Never let your puppy have free run of the entire house.
Keep puppy near you so you will know when it has to go
outside. When not with you, the puppy should be crated or
confined to a small area with baby gates. |
 |
Never let the puppy see you clean up his
potty in the house. Always use a good enzymatic cleaner
to remove all traces of urine and feces from the area. |
 |
Puppy should be on leash when being taken
to the potty area. Use the keyword "outside"
when you cross the threshold to take the puppy out to
potty. Put it to a command, "go potty" or
whatever you want to call it. When the deed is done,
praise lavishly. |
 |
If puppy has deposited excrement in the
house (accidentally), then pick it up in a paper towel
and take it to the potty area. Urine should be blotted up
with a paper towel and taken to the potty area. Then
bring puppy to that area and praise lavishly for pottying
outside. Remember, don't let puppy see you clean up
inside. |
 |
Everyone in the household must participate
in this activity. |
 |
Never punish the puppy harshly for
pottying in the house. You are the one who made the
mistake. |
 |
Catch the puppy doing something right.
Whenever you see your puppy going potty outside, praise
lavishly. Even though your puppy grows up, never take it
for granted! |
 |
Give this time. You have allowed the puppy
to develop this habit and habits take time to break. Be
patient and understanding. This is not a human being,
it's a dog. |
 |
Spaying and neutering is always a good
idea, no matter what the problem is. Marking territory is
one reason for in-house urination. Spaying/neutering will
eliminate that excuse. |
