"Charlie" was my
second Sammie who had a heart of gold, unmatched
determination and a degree in engineering. She is pictured
above during a preliminary weight pulling heat in 1976.
Though she only weighed 38 pounds, she easily won the under
40 pound division and went on to win the Desert Dog Drivers
1976 Overall Weight Pulling Championship by pulling 14 1/2 times her body weight (550
pounds) which was only 100 pounds less than the highest
weight pulled that day by an Alaskan Malamute who weighed
over 100 pounds more than her.
At home, she lived up to her
"tomboy" image by constructing elaborate tunnel
systems which included multiple entrances and chambers for
all the dogs to use.
