Winter's cold air brings many concerns for responsible dog owners. As
temperatures drop, keep the following precautions in mind.
Don't leave your
dog outside for long periods.
Be sure your dog
has adequate shelter that is warm and dry.
Be extra careful
when walking or playing with your dog near frozen lakes, rivers or ponds to keep
it from slipping or jumping in.
Groom your dog
regularly so its coat will keep it properly insulated.
Consider feeding
your dog more if it spends a lot of time outdoors or is a working animal.
Towel or blow-dry
your dog if it gets wet from rain or snow. Dry and clean its paws too.
Don't leave your
dog alone in a car. If the engine is on, carbon monoxide may endanger your dog's
life. If the engine is off, the car's temperature could get too cold.
Check your car for
anti-freeze leaks, and prevent it from flowing into your driveway or street and
gathering in pans where pets can access it. Although it smells and tastes good
to your dog, anti-freeze is poisonous and can be lethal.
