Belief (Iman)

The meaning if iman in the Arabic language is to "believe" or to hold as true. Islam has expanded on this original meaning and the meaning if iman in Islamic terminology includes three things:

1.Profession of faith with the tongue.

2.Conviction of the truth of this profession in the heart.

3.Implementation and action on the requirements of this profession with the body and the heart.

Also, in the hadith, the Prophet described iman as
"that which is firmly rooted in the heart and confirmed by action"

Another effect of iman is that Allah and His Prophet (sas) become more beloved to the believer than all else.

Iman complete with all of its three components makes the believers the best nation. Those who claim "belief in god" but reject ANY of the
messengers of Allah - such as the Jews who rejected both Isa and Muhammad or the Christians who rejected Muhammad - are not believers and it is not lawful for a Muslim to believe them to be so or to refer to them as such. Allah said:

{You are the best nation brought forth for mankind. You command what is right and forbid what is wrong and you believe in Allah. If only the People of the Book believed it would be better for them. From them are some believers, but most of them are corrupt.} Aal 'Imraan: 110

Iman is following the prophets - ALL of the prophets - and not just "belief in god". It is in our interest and for our good and Allah has no need for any of us nor for all of us put together. Allah said:

{O mankind, a messenger has come to you with the truth from you Lord so believe that is best for you. If you reject, surely Allah's is all that is in the heavens and the earth and Allah is the Knower, the Wise} An-Nisaa: 170

Iman - with its three parts which includes good deeds - brings a good life in this world and reward according to the BEST of one's deeds.
The Prophet (sas): "Whoever has his account discussed will be punished." Thus, the great reward of paradise is by Allah's great mercy and
generosity and is not commensurate with anyone's good deeds. An entire lifetime of the best possible good deeds could still not equal the
reward of Allah's paradise. That is why the Prophet (sas) said: "None of you will enter paradise by his good deeds." In other words, although good deeds (after belief) are indeed the reason for entering paradise, they are not sufficient.

We ask Allah that we may be among the 70,000 about whom the Prophet (sas) said: "...they will entire paradise without any account-taking." Among the attributes of this group as described by the Prophet (sas) is that they practice tawakkul or placing their reliance fully on Allah Most High. Allah said:

{Whoever does good deeds - whether male or female - and he is a believer, we will give him a good life and we will grant them their reward according to the best of what they used to do.} An-Nahl: 97

Iman not only includes good deeds, it includes ALL good deeds from the largest to the smallest. The Prophet (sas) said: "Iman is seventy-some parts. The least of them is removing something harmful from the road and the highest of them is saying 'Laa ilaha illa Allah'. Bukhari & Muslim

Iman includes submission of everything to Allah Most High, including our desires, our inclinations and what we "think". That is why no man-made system can ever direct society correctly. The Prophet (sas) said: "None of you has believed until his very inclinations are subservient to that with which I have been sent." And, Allah said:

{And know that among you is Allah's Messenger. If he were to obey you in many affairs you would experience diffficulty. But Allah has caused you to love iman and has made it something beautiful in your hearts and He has caused you to hate rejection, corruption and disobedience. These are the ones who are guided.} Al-Hujaraat: 7

This condition of surrender - of harmony between our desires and inclinations and what Allah loves and hates - is the fullness of iman and what gives the "sweetness". The Prophet (sas) said: "He has tasted the flavor of iman who is accepting of Allah as Lord of Islam as din and of Muhammad as Messenger." Muslim

The truthful believer is the one who, in addition to the above, rids himself of all doubt and commits and dedicates himself to Allah Most High:

{Say: Surely my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.}

..and sacrifices in Allah's path:

{The believers are none other than those who believe in Allah and His Messenger then have no doubts and fought with their wealth and their lives in the path of Allah. These are the truthful ones.} Al-Hujaraat: 15

Another effect of true iman is community - caring for one another, advising one another and commanding what is right and forbidding what is wrong.

Allah said:

{By time. Surely man is in loss. Except those who believe, do good deeds and advise one another with the truth and advise one another with patience.} Surat Al-Asr

This comes about by our complete submission - including our loves, our hates and our social relations - to Allah Most High. The Prophet (sas) said:

"Whoever has three things discovers the sweetness of iman: that Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than all else, that he love another only for the sake of Allah Most High, and that he hate to return to kufr (disbelief) as he would hate to be thrown into fire." Muslim & Bukhari
