WICHITA SOCIETY FOR NEUROSCIENCE

14th Annual Meeting Minutes

November 18, 2004

Ty Schwertfeger, MD, President, Richard Berger, MD, Vice-President, John Lasak, MD Secretary-Treasurer and 22 members attended.

Dr. Schwertfeger called the meeting to order. The 2003 Annual Minutes and 2003 Treasurer reports were passed out and approved by the members.

Dr. Massey gave a report from Michael Burke, MD. He is the coordinator for the required 3rd year NeuroPsychiatry Clerkship at the UKSM-W. He will be sending out an announcement after the first of the year inviting all faculty who supervise 3rd year NeuroPsychiatry students to attend a conference to discuss issues pertaining to the course including, but not necessarily limited to, student evaluation, course objectives and content. This will most likely involve an evening dinner meeting. All faculty are encouraged to attend, and to formulate suggestions beforehand which could improve the training and evaluations of the 3rd year students.

Dr. Schwertfeger reported that he has been contacted by Mark Weiss from K-State regarding the Brains Rule! outreach program run by his friend and colleague, Dr. Andrea Zardetto-Smith at the University of Nebraska. They are interested in having a Brains Rule! program in the State of Kansas. They would like to start the discussion about whether such an event could be put on with the local Society for Neuroscience chapters. We were asked whether we would support a Brains Rule! event in our region and if we would be an active participant.

If you are not familiar with Brains Rule!; Brains Rule! is an outreach program designed for basic neuroscience education. The target audience is youth. All kids have an innate interest in neuroscience. Brains Rule! is funded by NIH and numerous programs have been conducted around the country. Mark Weiss is interested in running them here in KS. Do not think that you will need to design all the activities de novo, as you can see on their website, several activities can be modified from existing presentations.

Dr. Schwertfeger thanked Michael Burke, Kore Liow and Norman Pay for serving as Directors for the past 3 years.

Nominations were made for 3 Directors for the years 2005 thru 2007. The following were elected and will be the new Directors for this term: Tally Bell, Bart Grelinger, and Gautham Reddy. Dr. Schwertfeger thanked them for agreeing to serve and welcomed them to the Board of Directors.

The meeting was then closed.

Entertainment was provided by JST us (John Laughary, Scott Wiggins, and Ted Davis)

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Davis, Office Administrator
