(Herm Wild's comments extracted from several e-mails) (on Maj. Cromer) He was flying C-141's.. Maybe there is a way of tracing him through that info. He was one great maintenance officer. He had a degree in engineering. I recall a time when I was on standby and got called out with an O/H Door hydraulic problem on a weekend, and could not solve it. I conferred with him by phone at home several times. He finally told me to sit tight, and drove all the way out to Wilber. The two of us tackled the problem together and finally solved it. At the end we were totally covered with hydraulic fluid, me in fatigues and him in flying togs. The floor was a mess also. He told me to go fill out the work order and he would clean up the mess, which he did. He helped me another time when I was having problems with a girlfriend in Spokane. At the time we were TDY at Vandenberg. I talked to him about it and he said he was flying up to Fairchild on the weekend piloting a C-121. He said he would have me back at Vandenberg Sunday night in time for Monday duty, which he did. I certainly appreciated his efforts. The last time I had any contact with him was when I was living in Delaware after I returned to civilian life. I called his house while I was in the vicinity of Dover one afternoon. (He had told me he was going to be stationed there). His wife answered the phone, and said he was flying and she was packing to go to Japan, and he would certainly miss not having a chance to talk to a former member of the 567th. As to Carlo Irwin , he was also a very good friend of mine. When I first got to Fairchild, having been transferred from Plattsburgh, he and I became close friends. I spent a lot of time with him and his first wife. I could tell stories of his attempts at home brew in the early days. In 1970, I assumed a teaching position with the Mount Vernon Wash. school district. I looked Carlo up and found him in Everett , a civilian like me. We used to visit at times. He had joined the Navy reserve at Whidby Is. NAS , and would sometimes stop by my house after returning from reserve duty. He then moved to the Bellevue area and I lost track of him as there was no forwarding address. If anything I have given you is useful, feel free to use it. especially that on Cromer. I passed on the info on Carlo since you said you were also a friend of his. I also had fairly close contact with Don Sabo for a number of years, first he was in Spokane, and then in his native Portland OR, but he also seemed to disappear. Glad to find Stoneburner so close, I have talked to him on the phone. We are going to get together soon. I wish I could locate Sgt. Marvin Clark , and SGT. Smith [SMITTY] from site facility maintenance. If you ever get a lead on them, including Ken Yargus, an electrician, let me know. |
