What is Acoustic Emission Testing and what is it used for?

Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) is a Non Destructive Testing method that is used to find structural defects and imperfections in structures and components in a vast array of applications. It is used to detect the presence and location of these structurally significant defects by making use of piezoelectric transducers that typically operates at frequency ranges between 20 to 600 kHz. These transducers are mounted on the structure by making use of a couplant media such as silicone vacuum grease and kept in place by duct tape, magnets, clamps etc. The transducers or sensors as they are more commonly called are calibrated in accordance with ASTM recommendations. The location and spacing of sensors depend very much on the attenuation characteristics of the structure under test.

A controlled stress is applied and the sensors are then able to detect the presence and evaluate the intensity of shock waves emitted by a discontinuity under stress. Data is stored in tabular form on computer hard drive and then converted to graphics for ease of interpretation. AET as a test method is a passive listening device and does not need to input a signal to be able to get the results.

If set up correctly with the attenuation characteristics of the material and the spacing between sensors taken into account for the material under test it becomes a global detection device with accurate location of defects and imperfections.
