For the month of May, 2003, Priscilla and Hank Brodkin, Wanda Dameron and Kim Garwood  surveyed the butterflies at two sites: Fazenda Rancho Grande near Cacaulandia, Rondonia, from May 2 through May 13 and Cristalino Jungle Lodge near Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso, May 15 through 26.

We are posting on this site images of species including some that were puzzling to us.  Any help that can be given will be greatly appreciated.

This is a work in progress - and as species are identified they will be removed from the site and others added.  The images were taken by Priscilla Brodkin (PRB) using a Nikon N80 with a 105mm Micro lens, by Kim Garwood (KG) using a Sony Mavica and Hank Brodkin (HB) using a Nikon Coolpix 5700. Please note that most  photography was to establish ID.  So not all the images are not works of art.

We would like to thank the folks at Cristalino Jungle Lodge and Fazenda Rancho Grande  for their cooperation and assistance in conducting this survey.  Cristalino provided us with a full time guide and river access to more distant trails.  Harald Schmidt and family at the Fazenda gave us the run of the place, prepared fish bait to attract butterfly species and let us use the library of butterfly books.  We can't express enough our appreciation for the kindness, cooperation and enthusiasm for our project shown by both of these facilities.  We can strongly recommend them for anyone interested in the ultimate in a natural history experience.
We would also like to thank  Jim Brock for allowing us to use his "book" of images taken of the collection put together by George Austin, himself and others of  most of the 1800 or so species of butterfly recorded at the Fazenda.

Kim Garwood and the Brodkins would lastly like to acknowledge with gratitude the many months of work and preparation put into this project by Wanda Dameron who prepared lists of the many butterflies - and birds - in this richest of all the world's habitats and put together butterfly guides using images from a number of sources.  Wanda also organized the very complicated travel details necessary to travel in this part of the world.
