If you're using Netscape Navigator (or similar web browser) and you have trouble
downloading files with commodore type file extensions, these instructions may help. Some
of the extensions I'm talking about are: .sda, .sfx, .lnx, .mad, .caf, .lnx
The file extension ".ca-" does not work with Windows compatible browsers, so I've
renamed them to ".caf". They will have to be renamed back to ".ca-" after they're
downloaded in order for the decomper to work properly.
Add a helper application to your browser. For Mime Type, specify "application". Next, for
Mime SubType, specify "cbm-compress". Then, for File Extensions, specify any file
extensions that are CBM specific -- like the ones I just provided you with. Make sure you
separate them with commas and no spaces.
An alternate way of saving the files is to point the mouse pointer at the file to be down
loaded and click the right mouse button instead of the left. Then choose the "save link as"
to down load it in binary format. Doing it with the left button displays it on the screen
(unless you have set it up as I suggested above) in ASCII format. Commodore files are in
PETASCII format and this translation will make the files useless.
I've recently been told that the Commodore type programs for use with the WWW do not
save these files properly, unless you have specified the files as binary. In any case, you can
go to the FTP sites (ftp://ftp.www. goodnet.com/users/d/dynamite/ or
ftp://ftp.www.goodnet.com/users/d/dynamite/ mods/) and get the files there. You must
make sure you are downloading in binary (FTP) and not text. The servers will send ASCII
text if you do not.
If anyone has any further suggestions or comments, feel free to send me some E-Mail.
Please be as detailed as possible.
