Tips & Hints
This block is a 10" block. (That is - 10 1/2" unfinished.) Use black fabric for the background. Use a muted (not bright) amish solid for the design. Muted colors are like barn red instead of cardinal red, mossy green instead of kelly green, gray-blue instead of royal blue, old gold instead of lemon yellow.
These blocks are not truly "scrappy" because the blocks are black and a color, but the scrappiness will come from each block using a different color with the black (see the graphic of the quilt below). You may post your color choice on the BOM discussion in the Prodigy Classic Community or the regular bulletin board spot so that we get a variety of color combinations. The half-square triangles can be made by 2" triangle paper or by your favorite quick half-square triangle method. See the February block instructions for my method.
Join two half-square triangle units to each side of a 2 1/2" square for the first, second, fourth and fifth rows. Follow the block graphic for the direction the half-square triangle units are turned. Press seams toward the black fabric. Sew alternating black and colored 2 1/2" squares together for the third row, beginning with a black square and continuing until there are five squares sewn together. If you have questions or comments, post a note to the bulletin board or email Squirrel or Azpatch. Blocks will be due by the third week of March.
