Tips & Hints

This block is a 10" block. (That is - 10 1/2" unfinished.) Use scappy tan print fabrics for the background. Tans are darker than ecru on ecru, all shades of dark beige and tan. Use a two different plaids for the design.

The small half-square triangles can be made by 2" triangle paper or by your favorite quick half-square triangle method. They are 2 1/2" unfinished. See the February block instructions for my method. The squares are 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" unfinished. See the February block instructions for my method.

For the first row, start with a tan print square. Join to a half-square triangle unit (half plaid #1 and half tan print), then to a square of plaid # 2. Then join to another half-square triangle unit (half plaid #1 and half tan print) and finish with another tan print square. Make another row just like the first row for the fifth row. Press the rows with the seams toward the square units. For the second row, start with a half-square triangle unit (half plaid #1 and half tan print). Join to a square of plaid #1, then join to a tan print square. Then join to another tan print square, and finish with a half-square triangle unit (half plaid #1 and half tan print). Make another row just like the second row for the fourth row. Press the rows with the seams toward the square units. Press the squares toward the darker fabric. For the third row, join a square of plaid #2 to a tan print square, then to another square of plaid #2. Then join to a tan print square and finish with another square of plaid #2. Press the rows with the seams toward the darker squares. Join row one to row two. Then join row two to row three, row three to row four and row four to row five. See the block graphic for color placement.
