If you're lucky enough to be a metropolitan Phoenix resident or visiting the area during tubing season, you can enjoy a wonderful day floating down the Salt River. Come relax in the beautiful Tonto National Forest surrounded by scenic desert, cacti, and mountains.

Tubing Season
Tubing season is usually from mid-May until mid-September, 7 days a week, weather permitting. However, the river water can be surprisingly cold and feels best when the mercury hits 100 degrees or more.

  • IMPORTANT! If you're planning to park in any of the parking areas along the Salt River (other than the Salt River Recreation parking lot), YOU MUST HAVE A TONTO PASS! The Forest Service has done away with the old parking pass machines and require all vehicles to have a $6 Tonto Pass. You can't buy these things at the Salt River areas, either. The three stores closest to the Salt River selling Tonto Passes are:
    • Diamond Shamrock "Corner Store" at the S.W. corner of Power Rd & McDowell (map)
    • Circle K at the N.E. corner of Power Rd & McKellips (map)
    • Big 5 Sporting Goods at the N.W. corner of Power Rd. & McDowell Rd. in the Bashas Shopping Center (map)
(NOTE: They don't open until 10am on Sundays!!!!)
Don't get caught parking in one of the Salt River recreation areas without a pass. The fines are up to $100. For more info on the Tonto Passes and where to buy them see their web site: Tonto National Forest - Tonto Pass

If you're tubing with Salt River Recreation and parking in their parking lot, you don't need a Tonto Pass.
