B-17Es 41-9101 and 41-9105 were on a ferry flight on 15 July 1942 from Greenland to Iceland along with six P-38s. When they flew into a blizzard on the way, they returned to Greenland discovering the base there was socked in. Low on fuel they were forced to ditch on the ice. One of the B-17s was used as a shelter from the weather until all the men were rescued.
In August 1980 two men Pat Epps and Richard Taylor started a search for the Lost Squadron. On 2 July 1988 using a steam probe they finally discovered the location of a B-17. Both B-17s are still under 250 feet of ice. The airframes are crushed from the shifting of the ice.
