A history of Glisten

Glisten was first settled by Humaniti by Sword Worlders in -77. A ship carrying colonists who were abandoning the colony on Tarsus, misjumped into the system and was trapped by a damaged jump drive. By the time a passing ship discovered them twelve years later there was a thriving colony in the asteroid belt called Hardjack. The colony grew steadily over the next 120 years to just over fifty thousand.
When a rich lanthanum strike was made in 102 settlers flocked to the system through Mora. Naasirka moved in soon afterward, building a refining facility and soon having a virtual lock on trade in the system. Three quarters of a century later the volume of trade had grown such that Naasirka began building a class D Starport at Hardjack City.
The abuses of the megacorp continued until Broderik Hansii, a belter chafing under the restrictive laws imposed by Naasirkas System Manager, led a revolt and established a belt wide government. This government did not include the other bodies in system a Naasirka continued many of its practices until 410 when a system wide government was instituted.
When the system was incorporated into the Imperium in 437, Varto Birnstein, a local industrialist instrumental in the incorporation, was elevated to a Barony. Just a few decades later the First Frontier War erupted and a Naval base was built on Jun (Glisten I Gamma Ee). The system remained virtually untouched by the war except for the massive construction drive which finished a class A port at Hardjack City.
In 599 Gith Abelthon, Baron Trin, was raised to Marquis Glisten. His former title was allowed to lapse by the Emperor and to this day there is no Baron Trin. Rumor has it that one of Trins lesser barons has claimed the title when travelling.
In 616 the Second Frontier War brushed Glisten when deep penetrating Vargr raiders hit the system, destroying Hardjack city and killing or abducting millions. That same year Glisten City was settled and Marquis Abethon declared that future developments would take place in buffered planetoid hulls. By 625 all construction was finished on the last constructed hull habitat to be built in the system.
Shortly after the war Oscar Bilstein, a decorated veteran, settled in Glisten City and opened a shipyard famous to this day for its high quality and innovative designs.
Raphael Gwenneth Akeilo was issued a patent for the Duke of Glisten in 630 for his brilliant performance in the Second Frontier War. With three Starbursts of Exteme Heroism as well as a host of other awards he was the most decorated soldier of the war. With his enfeeoffment of Glisten City and shrewd investments his line is one of the richest in the sector. With some of the proceeds he opened the Glisten Institute of Planetological Studies in 643.
By the 800's Glisten Glisten had become an industrial powerhouse churning out ships and consumer items to supply the busy subsector. In 802 the civil government and universities were found to have close ties with the Zhodani and the recently closed Psionics Institutes. They were disbanded and their personell arrested by Capt. Sarah K.G. Akeilo. She also arrested her cousin, the reigning Duke, for treason. After his conviction she was raised to Ducal rank. Nearly 80% of the government and university researchers charged with treason were convicted and sentenced to the newly opened penal asteroids.
Duchess Sarah instituted the requirement that all future holders of the title must have served with the Imperial armed services. She returned local rule to Glisten in 806 when an acceptable constitution was ratified.
An unintended consequence of the scandal of '02 was the 'Brain Drain' caused by the deaths of many of the systems intellectual elite in the penal mines of the belt. By the mid 900's the quality of the systems shipyards had fallen and shoddy workmenship was blamed for the loss of several capital ships.
Duchess Driggar chartered the Jump Institure of Glisten in 982 to help counteract the loss of technical ability. By 1000 technical prowess had risen such that computer implants became common to managers and executives to increase their productivity.
Zhodani and Sword World guerrillias brought the Fifth Frontier War to Glisten by attacking its shipyards in the opening days of the war. Although severely damaged the yards were in production within a year and by wars end had produced a record 65M dtons of shipping.
1116 brought the discovery of an Ancient site in the systems Kupier belts. The incredibly well preserved base is home to a population of neadertals transported from Terra during the Ancients heyday. It is still under intelligent control but attempts to contact the controlling intelligence have been rebuked.
