There are three classes of nobles in the Imperium. Honor or Award nobles to the rank of Marquis are created to honor achievements in the arts and sciences, business or military. Rank or Position nobles to the rank of Baron are granted patents of  nobility and may be for an office and nonhereditary or a "local" noble which is typically held by a family and passed down generation to generation. High Nobles consist of old and established families and are Imperial Barons to Archdukes, these are the members of the Imperial Peerage.

    Only the Emperor may create new High Nobles although he is strongly influenced by advice from the Grandduke of the sector involved. Orders of Knighthood may be created by Barons and above, the membership set by the creator of the order. Baronets may be created by Dukes and above.

    Knighthood is the only noble title which cannot be passed down. It must be earned anew by each generation. There are several well known Imperial orders of knighthood as well as numerous orders for specific domains, sectors and subsectors or even planets.  Knight Commanders are senior members of the Order or special honorees and may add KC before their orders initials. Either a senior Knight Commander of the order or the orders sponsor may knight a new member. Only the orders sponsor may create a Knight Commander of the order. Membership in these orders allows the use of the honorific 'Sir' or 'Dame' as well as the title letters on official paperwork. A person with multiple knighthoods lists them in order of precedence. Orders are ranked by sponsors rank, age and reputation...ie. The Defenders of Glisten rank the Protectors of Mora by virtue of their reputation. A knighthood in a higher order takes precedence over a knight commander of a lower order. ie..
