What is classification, and what use is it ?

If you have some Bahแ’ํ books at home you probably keep them on the same shelf, apart from the other books in the house. As your home collection grows you may start to sort them into categories: such as "books for seekers" or "scripture". This ordering of books that "belong together" makes your collection much easier to use. Provided, of course, that a book is put away in the right place – it is very much easier to find next time, and when found, it is next to other works with a similar subject and intent. You don’t have to think "Now I know I’ve another book on that subject", or even "Now I’ve got a spare copy of that somewhere": because there it is!

This sort of thing is already an embryo "classification". In fact, if you go just a little further, and put a "shelf mark" or number on the back of each book, to help you put it away in the right place every time, then you have a simple classification scheme.

Books (and other library materials) are classified primarily to make them easier to find. This is done by sorting them into a helpful classified order, and keeping them in that order.

What has that to do with cataloguing ?

Nothing, at least not directly. A catalogue is an external list of what you have in your collection – and although the classified shelf number (or "call number", as librarians call it) may very well form a useful part of the catalogue entry for each book, a collection may be classified without being catalogued at all, and vice versa of course.

Since the basic purpose of classification and cataloguing is the same (making books easier to find): classification and cataloguing do go together, in fact in most working libraries the same person can be found at work doing both, but they are not the same thing – and strictly neither is part of the other.

They classify books in my local library by putting little numbers on the back.

Yes, but those little numbers are not in themselves the classification scheme. This is a really important idea to grasp.

The librarian who classified each book decided on a subject for it, and then looked up that subject in a list (called a classification schedule) and found the number conventionally used for that subject. But the order the subjects themselves (and thus the books) are arranged in is what makes the classification – NOT the numbers (or letters) used to represent those subjects. To get back to our little home collection – it might be arranged in a classified order without necessarily having numbers (or letters) on the backs of the books at all.

The numbers, if and when they are put there, are to assist us in maintaining the classified order, but the order came first, not the numbers.

Actually, this schedule is based on a larger one designed to be used by an otherwise standard "Dewey library". This larger classification uses plain, Dewey style numbers, but here we basically use a combination of one letter followed by a single number (say "P3", or "T7").

Nonetheless, the real difference between this schedule and the one based on the Dewey Classification is simply that this one is shorter and less detailed. The underlying order of the subjects is pretty much the same.

It is really helpful that "Bahแ’ํ law" can be found at the letters "P" and "Q"!

Not to mention "Spirituality" at "S". This sort of thing is purely coincidental. If we had gone out of our way to use appropriate letters all through we would have ended up with an order dictated by the alphabet, which in practice is not very helpful. While learning to use the scheme, you may well find it mildly amusing to think of "minding your Ps and Qs" as a synonym for keeping Bahแ’ํ law. But it wasn’t written that way – it just happened.

What is the difference between the "schedule" and the "index"?

The schedule is arranged in the order the books will be arranged on the shelf – in "class order". The index is arranged, like most indexes, alphabetically.

Where’s the best place to look up a subject? Especially in a short little classification like this one, quite often the subject will be easier to find in the schedule itself. If you want to use the index, then recognise that it cannot cover every possible name for every possible subject. It is classically bad practice to pick numbers straight from the index – always check back in the schedule, to see what the subject looks like in context.

Some headings are proving too broad for me!

It is possible to subdivide some of the very broad subject headings in this schedule

1. By referring to a copy of the Phoenix schedule, and adding some of the detail to be found there.

2. By sorting the materials under a heading that seems to attracting an unwieldy number of items, and arranging these in what seems a sensible order, perhaps adding a number or two to the call number at this point.

3. By considering at such points, but only as a last resort, a form of 'alphabetical' arrangement.

It may be there are places where a little more detail could be added to this schedule, to make it workable – as one of the first users of the scheme, do feel free to point out such things , so that future editions can be improved.

BUT… Too much of this sort of thing is a sign that your collection is starting to outgrow this schedule, and that you need to upgrade to a "larger" classification.
