Paul Nahaolelua was born in 1806 in Kawaihae, South Kohala, Hawaii. It is said his name, which means "the two foreigners" was given to him by Kamehameha, who took two foreigners, John Young and Isaac Davis into his employ. Paul studied at Lahainaluna Seminary.
He was a schoolmaster at the Royal School in Kaupo, Maui. He was also District Magistrate and Circuit Judge of Maui. In addition, Paul was the Royal Postmaster under Kamehameha. He served as deputy to the governor, James Young Kanehoa, and succeeded him in 1852, serving as Governor of Maui until 1874.
During the elections of 1874, he became president of the legislative assembly voting for Kalakaua instead of Emma.
He was appointed Minister of Finance, and served from February 17, 1874 until his retirement on October 31, 1874.
Paul's wife was Helekunihi. Their son Obed died shortly after birth on March 20, 1858. They adopted Helekunihi's nephew, Edward George Huakini "Kia", son of her brother Aki and his wife, Kaaiohelo. Edward would be known as "Kia" Nahaolelua.
Paul served during the reigns of Kamehameha II, IV, and V; Lunalilo and King Kalakaua. He died September 15, 1875 in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. Read Paul Nahaolelua's obituary from the Hawaiian Gazette, September 22, 1875.
