Sub Officer Spots Man Overboard,

Sailor Rescued After 22 Hours In Sea:

August 1980

It was a million-to-one shot.  A Finnish sailor can thank a hawk-eyed U.S. Navy chief petty officer for saving his life after he had been in the ocean 70 miles off the east coast of Florida for 22 hours.

Chief Petty Officer Fred Crano was on the periscope watch aboard the nuclear submarine USS Cincinnati yesterday afternoon when he spotted what he thought was a trash can bobbing in the calm Atlantic waters . . .

The sailor, identified only as 37-year-old Mr. Kamppuri, had fallen overboard from the Finnish freighter Finnbeaver late Sunday afternoon.
