You need to remove the fan's rear cap and some of its drive mechanics, leaving a tang to attach your drive shaft to. I used a solder lug to adapt to it - wrapping it with wire and soldering it, then screwing it to a standoff. I then soldered a steel cable to the standoff. The steel cable kind of flops around but the wand assembly does rotate as required.
