Timor Domini fons vitae

The Butlers of Bunnahow descend from Sir Pyors (Pierce) Butler (b. 1520) of Grallagh Cas. Co. Tipp. by his 2nd wife Lady Honora FitzGerald dau. of James, l0th Earl of Desmond. Sir Pierce (he was knighted by Henry VIII after the capture of Boulogne 1544) was. 2nd s of James, 9th Lord Dunbovne (by summons) by Lady Joan Butler dau of Pierce 8th Earl of Ormonde. His eld. bro." James, 10th Lord Dunboyne was cr. Baron Dunboyne by patent 1541 and is ancestor to the present Lord Dunboyne, who is 26th Baron by summons and 17th bv Patent. The first member of the family to settle in Co. Clare was James Butler of Shranagoollen (transplanted 1657). From his eld. s James descend the Butlers of Doon. Bunnahow and Walterstown. His 2nd son Sir Theobald (Toby) Butler Solicitor-General, temp. James II, was ancestor to the Butlers of Ballyline. (vide registered pedigree, Ulster Office, and Burke's Peerage : Dunboyne B).      -- The Irish Genealogist

Pierce Butler b. 1520 of Grallagh Castle was also known as Wild Peter.  The Dunboyne branch was the first of the Irish Butler families to use the name Peter instead of Piers or Pierce.  Some of them were also actually of Celtic origin being O'Briens rather than of Norman origin as they were descended from William O'Brien who married his cousin Catherine Butler daughter of Edmond Butler 8th Baron Dunboyne.  So now this is starting to make sense.

The O’Briens of Bansha, Co. Tipp. are paternally O’Briens of the family of MacBrien Gonagh (Ui Cuanach) or Coonagh. They acquired the Bansha estate through the marriage of Morgan O’Brien of Ballyphilip, Co. Limerick, with Catherine, dau. and co-heir of Capt. Edward Butler of Bansha, a descendant of Piers fitzThomas, natural s. of Thos., 10th Earl of Ormonde. (according to Sir Henry Blackall)

I believe more correctly, Morgan O'Brien married Eleanor Butler Catherine's sister (Catherine married an Archer thus creating the family of Archer-Butler) of the same family (according to Lord Dunboyne)  Thus, this begins the family of the O'Brien-Butlers when in 1690 Murrough O'Brien Butler became heir to Capt. Edward Butler's estate in Bansha.
