 Project Dogwaffle

It looks "kinda sorta lika" a program from Righthemisphere, but certainly a lot more price point accessible. Dogwaffle is a complete digital image editing program that simply works.

Unless you are a photo pro, or have some very demanding needs of a full streght editor there is something to like about this solid program.

Project Dogwaffle

Dogwaffle 2,1

Requirements

  1. Windows 98 Release two or higher
  2. 256 Megs of Ram
  3. Video at 1024 by 786, 16 bit or higher

In a world dominated by Adobe Photoshop, the arena is wide open for programs that are aimed at prospective artists that do not have the five or six hundred dollars needed to enter the high stakes of hard core digital imaging.

Without belaboring the point, there are alternatives. Project Dogwaffle is not trying to be a budget photoshop. In fact, it is not trying to be anything other than what it is: a neat, fast, efficient program that for most end users could be a real viable option.

For the photo pros, the look of the program may bring to mind that other high end, and very cost prohibitive program, Deep Paint.  The similarities in feel to Righthemesphere’s  offering is arresting. The paint tools have that same get down to business feel. In terms of actual functionality, this program covers all of the bases, and then some.

The program takes the point of view that you start with an image. Opening the program automatically pulls up a screen that asks you to pick the image size you wish to work with before you can actually use the program.  You cannot simply open an existing file from within the program first. It is an interesting approach, and it could be seen as a recognition of how users are going to actually utilize the program.

Compatible with the I Pen from Fingersystems and the famous Wacom Tablet, this program again gets the basics down.

The program also has a very helpful site associated with it as well. Filled with tutorials, a gallery and direct access to user groups and online groups, the entire feel of the web site is like some grass roots online convention.  Homey and welcoming, the site is easy to access and also demonstrates the range of the program.

Summation

If you are the adventurous type, and want to get your feet wet with digital imaging, but don’t feel like parting with a hundred dollars or more to do it, this little program is not a bad way to get started.   Email me if you have any questions, or would like links.  Thank you.

With an interface that is actually attractive to look at, and not at all condescending, this is a full featured tool.  For pros that need the kind and type of detail that Photoshop offers, you will be disappointed. Again, this is not a high end pro tool for designers. Instead, it is a price point friendly option for those that want to learn more about the basics.
