A review By Kurt von Behrmann For some reason USB portable drives have not taken the market by storm as they have in other parts of globe. In places where PC or Mac ownership is still a luxury, USB drives have become popular. Small, quiet, efficient and not requiring any additional power source other than the USB ports need to communicate with them, these have become the small peripherals of choice for those on the go. As diskettes have become increasingly obsolete, and zip drives driven to extinction due to their high cost and lack of compatibility with systems that do not already have zip drives installed, USB drives overcome many hurdles. They are small, work on a multitude of platforms and they only require USB ports, which have been standard on most PC’s and Mac’s for years. Verbatim’s little red wonder represents the best of what a USB driver needs to be. Shipping with a neck strap, or as it is called a “carry Laynard” an extension cable for hard to reach ports and sporting a bright fire engine cover, this diminutive device is not only road worthy, it looks smart too. Weighing practically nothing, the Store ‘N’ Go can be carried on a key chain or conveniently in a pocket. Performing faster if you have USB 2 ports, but also working well if you only have USB 1 ports, the device, and I have used several, are consistent in quality and do what they are supposed to do with little effort, if any at all. A single flashing red light warns when the disk is in use, and of course it is easily configurable with windows XP. The top of the device snaps in securely. Though fragile, the device does not feel it will fall apart. Shipping with software to make it compatible with operating systems that do not support it, the Store ‘n’ Go comes with nearly everything you need to take your files with you. When a DVD or CD is too much, for those moments when you want to take data with you on the fly, this is an excellent storage solution. Summation Small, with an interesting appearance, the verbatim unit has a certain wow factor. The most important thing is that these devices work, and work well. Faster with USB 2 ports than USB 1, the Store ‘n” Go does well either way. As an elegant solution for those that need portability, speed and interoperability with a number of operating systems and computers, Verbatim has hit the right note.
