7 shooters showed up for the 14th annual Sunflower Shootout. Winds were from 3 oclock switch to 9 oclock o'clock and then then around 12 oclock.

Mike McConnell recieved trophy's for 1st place and high target of 2125. Rich Lakey received a plaque for 2nd place . Jan McConnell won a trophy for 3rd. Kayleigh Dick won a trophy for high junior

I tried something different this year. Instead of the usual wooden plaque I gave nutmen trophy's that had a nutman shooting from the bench

    Nutman Trophy

I want to thank all those who helped. Especially our scorers Christina Dick and Gene Newsom.

    What is American Rimfire Association?

American Rimfire Association At Air Capitol Gun Club

American Rimfire Association (ARA) is a rapidly growing shooting sport for Rimfire benchrest. Started in 1998, Air Capitol Gun Club (ACGC) has been shooting ARA since 1999. It is the pursuit of extreme rimfire accuracy. It can become addicting.

Air Capitol Gun Club is located near Whitewater Kansas. We shoot ARA Monthly from April through October. ACGC has 18 covered concrete benches. Shooters need to bring a stool of about 18 inches height. We have a few chairs but they are not high enough for most shooters. Although membership is required to practice at the range, all shooters are invited to all of ACGC matches.

    Benches

Our benches with some shooters concentrating on the target and wind

A little about the sport. Safety and fun are most important to ARA. When the gun is removed from its case we require the bolt to be removed from the action. If your action makes this impractical a chamber flag is required. I have those available for use. Only prior to the command to fire does the match director give the command to insert bolts. At the end of each target the match director gives the command to “remove bolts and make the line safe” before shooters are allowed down range to change targets.

ARA is shot from a bench at a distance of 50 yards with .22 rimfire. We use the ARA 25 bull target. One record shot per bull. Possible score of 2500 has only been shot once in eight years. A truly difficult and challenging target. Sighter bulls are also on the target. We shoot 4 targets per match. Any safe .22 is permitted with any rest that is not attached to the bench. Most shooters use target rifles such as Remington 40x, Winchester 52 or Anshutz or anyone of numerous custom .22 available. Many of the older target rifles hold their own with any of the custom rifles. Any scope is allowed. Any .22 rimfire ammo is allowed, but shooters use standard velocity ammo. Contrary to what you might think, high velocity ammo is not used because it drifts more in the wind than standard velocity. Also there is no target quality high velocity ammo made for that reason. Most commonly used ammo is Eley and Lapua. Rumor has it that Fiocchi is starting to produce their Super Match again with good results. Also some of the Wolf and JAGD is performing pretty good.

    Sunflower Shootout NightShoot

One of our night shoots showing an assortment of wind flags and the great conditions a night shoot sometimes brings.

Match strategy. Unlike Olympic style shooting where physical skill of holding the gun steady is a main requirement, Benchrest shooting has a low requirement of physical effort. It is well suited to the older or disabled shooter. Also with a high power scope many do well who have difficulty using iron sights. In fact, the design of the target requires use of a scope. The two most important aspects of shooting well are tuning the rifle and learning to read the wind. Tuning the rifle involves finding an ammo that shoots really well. This involves testing different brands. Also little things like action screw torque can affect the rifle accuracy. Learning to read the wind requires the use of wind flags. This can be something as simple as using surveyors tape attached to poles to very elaborate wind flags. These can be homemade (as mine are) or purchased. Most users have 2 to 6 of these flags. It takes much practice to understand the subtleties of the Kansas wind. For example, a constant 10 mph crosswind can move a .22 bullet one inch at 50 yards. Of course the wind is never constant all the way to the target.

What I generally recommend shooters who are interested in trying ARA is don’t buy any equipment until you see if you like it and see what other shooters are using. You can view the wind flags of the shooter next to you. We welcome all guest including juniors. There is no entry fee for juniors at this time. Come on out. We have a bench reserved with your name on it. Ask questions and above all be safe and have fun.
