Enjoyed your review of some particular styles of poetry and am inspired to investigate more and try some of my own. Haven't thought about these possibilities for many years! Thanks.

One addition: in at least a couple of types of poems, not only are the rhyme schemes critical (nice job showing some alternatives!), but the rhythm, or meter, is prescribed, too.

One such poem is the limerick. The rhyme scheme, as you say, is aa bb a AND the rhythm is da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DUM
da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DUM
da-(da-)DUM da-da-DUM
da-(da-)DUM da-da-DUM
da-da-DUM da-da-DUM da-da-DUM
Quite a challenge!

The second poem type that comes to mind that requires a particular meter is the sonnet . It's called "iambic pentameter" ("penta" = five, so, five beats per line).........
da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM
da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM...etc.
(Think Shakespeare, both poems AND PLAYS!)

By the way, there's something called "Blank Verse," which I think of as lying somewhere between sonnet and free verse: it requires five beats per line as above, but has no prescribed rhyme scheme (or indeed, any expectation of rhyming at the ends of lines at all) and no set number of lines. Nice if you want to play with the tightness of iambic pentameter but not try/have to do rhymes at the same time--and it leads to a poem that's both structured and loose.

Hope these add some additional interesting twists to people's adventures in poetry; they have to mine! And thanks for setting up such a good site.

Best wishes from an(other?) ol' English major!
Levanah

This will be to some adult learners (aprox. 18) who are trying to renew their writing skills. It would be most appreciated and I will do my best to do them justice.
Thank you so much, in anticipation.

Hello Bernie. I stopped in to read some of your beautiful poetry. Your poem, "What means the most to Me" touched me deeply. I've run out of time today, but I will be back soon to read more. Your site is looking better than ever.
Kind thoughts and Gentle hugs~
