Betty A. Gerich has had six solo exhibitions of her sculpture, including a one person exhibition at The New Britain Museum of American Art. She is an exhibiting member of Gallery on the Green in Canton, CT, The New England Sculptors Association and Connecticut Women Artists. Betty has received an Individual Artist Fellowship Grant Award from the Greater Hartford Arts Council for her ceramic sculpture. Her work is featured in"500 Figures in Clay", a book published by Lark Books and "Best of America, Sculpture Artists and Artisans".
Inspired by the expressive potential of the human body, Betty's most recent series of wall sculptures includes modeled portions of the human face which portray states of mind and the communication of emotion. As the face series has developed, Betty has addressed a wide variety of themes. The pieces invite interpretation on the part of the viewer and they have become more complex and ambiguous when many faces and objects are combined in a single work. All of the sculpture is made of clay which is fired in an electric kiln. The work has been fumed by exposing the clay to smoke, which colors it with combinations of golden tan, brown and umber, or it is painted with acrylics to achieve the desired patina. All of the pieces are one of a kind.
