Thumb Tip Techniques

This section is not actual tricks, but it explains the details in which one might need to perfect his thumb tip talent and get the best quality output in order to maximize the effect's control over the spectator's mind.

Technique 1:

I once saw a seminar of a guy that did a thumb tip routine. He repeatedly stressed the fact that you don't need to point the end of the tip at the audience to hide it. He quoted how it would look unatural and stiff for those watching. He then told a story about an effect that he did. At one point in the show, he was supposed to ditch the tip, and shake the hand of a volunteer. This peticular time, he accidently left the tip on, and shook his hand unknowingly with the tip. When he talked with a friend afterward, his friend told him that he didn't realize that he discarded the thumb tip, and he asked how he did it. The man then realized that he acted so natural, that it didn't matter that the thumb tip was right in front of the volunteers face. I'm not saying that just because of this one man you shouldn't use the technique. I'm just emphasizing on the fact that the key to succeeding in thumb tip magic is to act as though one isn't even being worn.

Technique 2:

A good technique that I picked up was rubbing your hands together after an effect like the picture to the right. Do this right in front of a spectator and this way they will see that your hands are completely empty (make sure to spread your fingers) and the thumb tip will be hidden behind the rest of your hand.

Technique 3:

After the ending of a trick, just drop your hands to your side for a moment. (don't immediatly put them in your pocket!! This is a dead giveaway to even a laymen that something fishy is going on. Make sure they have clear view that your hands are empty, and then drop them to your side to show that you have nothing to hide.

Technique 4:

When stowing your thumb tip in your pocket in the middle of an effect, a good distraction is to reach into your pocket and grab a pen, or a magic wand. This way you can slide the tip into your pocket so when the trick is over you have nothing to hide. (I often use this tip with the more curious type.)

Technique 5:

Having some problems taking the tip on and off? slip some baby powder in there, cover it with your thumb and shake pour excess out, and voila!

Technique 6:

The Best way to get rid of you TT after you do a trick or routine, instead of looking like an idiot and putting your hands in your pocket, just pull up your pants, and leave the TT in there. You can carry multiple loads, and there is no problem looking natural. Just remember to wear looser pants if you usually wear tight ones.
