Aqua-Metropolis

The land under LEGO City 2 was sold in order to secure the purchase of a larger parcel of land elsewhere.  Unfortunately, the new parcel required significant construction to prepare it for habitation.  During this interim period, all the construction materials and people of LEGO City 2 were bundled up in cardboard and plastic containers to await their new home.

During this hard period of waiting, great fears were raised that the LEGO culture would be corrupted and/or lost forever during this long period of inactivity.  Many meetings were held in order to invent some way of preserving the plastic way of life in some way or another.  A small sliver of land could be rented, but this was only enough space for one building.

Finally, a brilliant idea was proposed.  The LEGO people had the money and technology to survive under the sea!  A site was easily found with plenty of room, 100m below the surface and about 40km off shore. This area could be used free of charge.  

The catch was that there was only enough life support equipment for about 1 out of every 10 inhabitants.  Certain important people were automatically chosen (the mayor, the architect, etc), and the rest were chosen by lottery.  These lucky few were charged with keeping the LEGO culture alive during this interim period.

Buildings for Aqua-Metropolis are constructed on a small section of rented land.  They are then moved onto a barge, floated out to their final location, and sunk.

The Aqua-Metropolians are very sensitive about outsiders in their city.  Therefore, virtually no pictures are allowed under-water.  Most images are taken of the buildings immediately after construction, prior to being sunk.  The picture below is a rare underwater shot of one of the busier portions of the city.
