In the
early summer of 2000, real estate prices in LEGO City 2 began to
soar. Because of this, each new building became taller and
taller. Older buildings were similarly extended to keep up.
The 13-story blue glass space research building dominated the eastern side of town. Because no more prime land was available, this structure was built directly on top of the two existing railroad lines. Next to it, a chic restaurant was added to the black (with yellow window) train office building. This restaurant (called "Top of the City") became the most popular eating establishment in the city. |

As one can see, the land was all used up. Accordingly land prices went through the roof. People could no longer afford to live inside the city. Complaints were repeatedly made to the land owners. Unfortunately no more land existed nearby. Finally, a painful decision was made. A larger parcel of land existed elsewhere and could be obtained for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, this land was not yet suitable for building. Even worse, this new parcel could not be purchased without selling off all the land in the existing city. The owners of the new land insisted on and immediate decision and the citizens decided to make the ultimate sacrifice: The would sell Lego City 2 to secure the needed funds, destroy the buildings, and move to temporary quarters while the new land parcel was prepared. Two giants were hired to perform the dreaded demolition work. In two days, the beauty that once was Lego City 2 was no more. It became a barren, brown landscape devoid of any plastic life. All building materials were carefully sorted by color and type. Some large vehicles were put into storage intact. The people were all moved to cramped, cardboard quarters, eagerly awaiting their new, less cramped quarters. The good news is that all the construction materials have now been moved to a temporary area. The land on which LEGO City 2 was built has been sold and the new land (twice the size) is currently in escrow. Construction should begin on Lego City 3 around January 2001. |
