| This is
Liquid Cathedral. Although related to its sister building, the
Cathedral of Ice, Liquid Cathedral is only about half the external bulk, and
has a
much smaller, more intimate interior.
The cathedral is made up of large sheets of glass surrounded by multiple layers of exoskeleton buttressing. The extensive buttressing is necessary because the micro-thin glass that makes up the inner-most walls cannot support its own weight. The external framework provides support that pulls the upper part of the glass upwards, preventing it from collapsing in upon itself. This shot shows the cathedral from the back. The curved choir area is visible. Above the choir, the higher "bubble" is the central dome of the cathedral. Although designed using a classical gothic layout, this church is decidedly modern looking with its extensive use of large glass panels. |

| This is a
front view of the cathedral. The two towers present massive sheets
of unbroken glass tapering to a point at the very top.
Rather than the traditional "rose" window in the middle, this building uses a tear-drop shape emphasizing the "liquid" theme. |

| This top
view shows the modern, futuristic look of the building. The multiple
levels of buttressing make the building look like some sort of robotic
creature poised for the kill.
Unfortunately, there is little possibility for building this cathedral out of real LEGO because I used several parts that are not obtainable in the colors used (such as the UFO "wing" piece which only comes in gray). Additionally, some parts (such as the 6x6x9 panel with a curve at the top) are extremely rare and difficult to get. However, substitutions could be made to produce a rough facsimile. |
