Our Ministry: Claiming the "E" Word - AFC 1996

What Language Shall I Borrow?

1 Cor. 9:1923
Learning the language of others involves more than just vocabulary.

Paul's witness was adaptable in style, but singular in content.
We are translators in cross-cultural communication
All people need to hear the gospel; therefore, we must learn the languages of many cultures, including cultures within our own nation.

Storytellers
Identity is defined by context - stories communicate identity, values
Such stories easily draw distinctions, which may become divisions

Folk theology
Tell the stories of the Bible. The stories themselves are adequate. Interpretation is not a critical priority.
Each person has a story to tell of conversion and experiences practicing piety

Seekers
Identity is in pursuit of a 'cause' - one is moving through life
Satisfaction is drawn from internal measure of authenticity and integrity to the cause.

Journey theology
We are on a pilgrimage following Jesus toward God.
Reflective development and the internal battle with self is one of growing "trueness"

Career-minded
Identity is defined by measure against external standards of achievement.
Life can always be made better than it is now. Education is important. Personal connections are often restricted to family only. Can be lonely.

Explanatory theology
Rational, systematic, coherent claims based on God's sovereignty and grace.
Share the unique value of each individual as individual.
Offers security and acceptance independent of achievement - surprise!
Coherent, comprehensive view of life calls for active extension of goals beyond self advancement to the service of others.

€ Any of these cultures feel more at home to you?
€ How would you bridge across to another?

At the heart of all we believe, do, and trust as Christians is the amazing good news that God in Jesus Christ reaches out to the world in love.
