Basic Beliefs: Lord, Teach Us To Pray - AFC 1997

The God of Our Longing

Luke 11:513; Rev. 1:8; 1 Cor. 13:12

The God of our longing is waiting to dwell closely with us.

How do you picture God when you pray?

How we view God affects our praying and may even block it completely. We may need to restore balance to our images if we hope to relate to God in a meaningful way.

What metaphors are sometimes used for aspects of the Trinity?

The images of God we use depict the nature of our relationship with God, not the essence of God.

God is transcendent; God becomes imminent through prayer

God is other, distant, beyond, above us‹until the relationship gets personal.

The God who waits
Ask and you will receive, see and you will find.
God is somehow self-restrained until we ask.
Our step of initiative in dependent asking (faith) somehow catalyzes grace.

€Do we need regular appointments with God?
€Are we privileged to grace that we don't bother to accept?
€Who is waiting for who?

Prayer is your response to your awareness of God.
