LIGHTED TO LIGHTEN

(eg. John 3:16-20)

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church: The present Metropolitan His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma is the 21st Mar Thoma. The throne of St. Thomas, which dates back to the apostle St. Thomas who arrived in India in 52 AD, saw various milestones like the Synod of Diamper (1599), the Coonen Cross Oath (1653), Mavelikara Synod (1836) and the Synod of Mulamthuruthy (1876). Since it is not easy to trace the descendants through the ages, an attempt is made to record the indigenous occupants of the throne.

The Mar Thoma Church has been dynamically involved in the socio-cultural settings of North America and Europe for the past 30 years. Fundamentally an immigrant Church, she has contextualized her ministry in her new life situation without compromising the rich ethos and tradition received from her motherland of Kerala, India. Currently, under the rubric of the Diocese, there are 51 parishes and 20 congregations. In order to cater to the ministerial needs of the Diocese, there are 48 clergy as well as functioning organizations for children, youth, women, and evangelistic work. The Diocese is presided over by the Diocesan Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa.

The formal inauguration of the Sunday School Samajam comprising all the Schools, which had already been started in the parishes, took place at Maramon Convention (India) in 1905. The first Sunday School of Mar Thoma Church of Las Vegas was inaugurated on Jan 26, 2006 by Rev. Noble V Jacob of Los Angeles.

The growth and development of the Sunday School Samajam as one of the leading Christian Education organizations in India was the result of the extraordinary organizing ability of Rev. V. P. Mammen and his untiring efforts during a period of 47 years. In those days, though with limited travel facilities he visited churches in different places, traveling in bullock carts and riding bicycles. He organized syllabuses for the different grades and published the lessons to be taught in various classes. A publication entitled 'Sandarsini' began to be published in 1911 containing articles helpful to the students, teachers and parents and lesson notes for Sunday School teachers. Since 1952 text books are published for the various classes. From 1977 the curriculum of the Christian Education Council of India is followed by the Sunday School Samajam.

The Mar Thoma Fellowship of Las Vegas was officially approved by our mother church, Mar Thoma Church of Los Angeles at the meeting held on 08/29/2008. Rev. Varghese A.  Ninan, Vicar of Mar Thoma  Church of Los Angels chaired the meeting.

In the past, the members of Mar Thoma Church of Los Angeles who are residing in Las Vegas meets together in their houses and Vicar of Los Angeles church visited and conducted the services here occasionally. Initially we started with three Mar Thoma members with inter-denomination cooperation. We gratefully remember their cooperation and help. Rt. Rev. Dr. Geevarghese Mar Theodosius Episcopa and  Rt. Rev. Thomas Mar Timotheos Episcopa blessed us with their presence during their visits in USA. Quite a few vicars also visited us other than the vicar from Los Angeles Church.

The time is changed and everybody have their own denomination prayer groups and so has Marthomites.

The general body unanimously elected the following people for 2008-2009 to be in charge of the positions as listed below:
