Bill Jacky has always been a teacher and coach, but his plans never happened. Divine providence planned his entire life. Getting a BS in Mathematics and a Secondary Teachers Certificate at the University of Nevada, Reno, he tried his hand as a math/science teacher in a rural four room school. Students were more interested in dating. Trying again he returned to the University of Nevada, Reno with a teaching assistantship to complete his Master’s degree in Mathematics. This plan also failed. The United States Army had its own plans. "Welcome! You are hereby ordered to report ..." All but three of his Company got orders for Viet Nam. Bill and two others were sent to the well-known metroplex of Camp Carroll Depot, Waegwan, South Korea, a town about as big as the town he taught in. |
In its wisdom, the Army trained Bill in quarter mastering, but assigned him to the computer data center. Bill did teach Korean soldiers English, but he took it on himself to learn programming in the usual Army way - read the book. He became a programmer, where he taught and supervised six Korean programmers. His two year stint brought its rewards. He earned Soldier of the Quarter, Eighth Army, and an Army Commendation Medal. Army life wasn't particularly appealing, but Korean women were. While there, he met and married his wife, Kim.
Returning to the states in August, 1971, he settled in Salt Lake City, and was recruited by Electronic Data Systems (EDS).
In his 27 years with EDS he was a programmer, systems analyst, systems programmer, information security analyst, development manager, IE consultant, and business management consultant and executive consultant.
His EDS experience included 5 ˝ years supporting EDS’ joint venture in South Korea, 2 years as an expatriate, 3 ˝ years commuting. Here he consulted with Korean Chaebol executives and learned facilitation and consulting skills. Upon return, he facilitated technology planning sessions with EDS organizations worldwide in planning a global technology strategy.
In 1998 an employee of his introduced him to Toastmasters. He was Secretary of Premiere Presenters (#8110), in District 50, January to June, 1999.
Bill retired in 1999 at the tender age 55 and moved to New Mexico. He joined SpeakWell Toastmasters (#7433) and held offices of President, VP of Education, and VP of Public Relations. He was District 23, Division C Governor from July 2001-June, 2002. While in New Mexico, he worked with the newly formed 23 Facilitation and Support Team (FAST). His facilitation work in EDS provided great insight into Club Coaching.
In June, 2002, he moved to Las Vegas, and lobbied for developing FAST in District 33. He developed the “FAST, V 1.1” manual, then converted it to the “Play Book,” restructuring it to match the Toastmaster International plan of Club Coach.
Bill has been a member of several Clubs in Las Vegas, holding all officer positions. He coached Schoolhouse Toasters (#2611), Good News Toasters (#9324) and Star Masters, (#3883) to Presidential Distinguished. Bill was the first Club Coach Chair for District 33, a developer of the Coach training program used across several Districts in the West, and trained over 50 coaches in several districts. He is the winner of the 2002-2003 Jerry Theo “Behind the Scenes” award and Toastmaster of the Year, District 33, 2003-2004. He was elected Lieutenant Governor Marketing for the 2005-2006 year (a Distinguished District that year), but did not continue up the leadership chain due to health issues.
He is active in the church being in the choir, a liturgist and Las Speaker, was on the Staff Relations Committee, currently Trustee Secretary. He has run two Youth Leadership programs. His lifelong ambition is to continue being a teacher and facilitator in whatever manner the Lord has in mind for him.
