Barry,

I had a conversation with a parent last night that told me about a day when 'more than one' arrest was made at Chariho.  I find it disturbing that I have to find out about these things from parents.

Why aren't we, the school board, notified when an arrest has occurred at Chariho.  I would like to request that the board be notified when this occurs.  I would also like a list of the police interventions that have occurred last year.

Please make sure this communication is included in the next meetings packet.

Bill

Bill…

I alert the Committee of all major incidents that occur in any of our schools; of course, there is some judgment on my part as to what is considered “major”.  My intent has always been to be open and up front with the Committee.  If the Committee would like to be advised each time the police are notified, that request should come from the Committee; perhaps you can bring it up under Committee requests.  Unfortunately, I do not have a list of police interventions from last year.

In regards to “more than one” arrest, that’s certainly possible.  For example, if there’s a fight between two students, both would be arrested.  The police are utilized as called for in our policy…and sometimes more.  Your communication will be included in the packet.  B.

If the board does not wish to be notified, I would still like to be.  Please put in on the agenda and we will determine the boards intent.  Thx

Bill...
Whatever the Committee wants is fine; however, my preference is that
all members get the same information.  What was the nature of the
incident(s) about which the parent told you?  B.

I think parents have a right to know how often and why the police are
called
to the school.  Don't you?

Sure...especially since we call police in accord with School Committee
policy.  I'd like to know more about the incident that was reported to
you by the parent...date, nature of incident...so that I can look into
the matter.  You imply that you were not informed; therefore, I want to
check to see what happened.

It involved a coupld of students and stolen property.  I don't know the date
and would have to track her down to find more info.  And, of course, you
know I was not informed as it would have had to come from you.  Correct?

But if you do want parents informed, why wouldn't you want to give me the
info, whether the board wanted it or not?  I am not questioning the reason
for calling the police, I just think parents should know when things like
this happen.  Better yet, I would prefer to know before I am told by a
parent (and look like we are not informed of what's going on).  I was just
as surprised by the incident as she was that I didn't know about it.

As I recall the incident (if it's the same incident), we called the police because we became aware of an outside-of-school shoplifting incident.  There was an attempt to sell the stolen merchandise in school. I don't recall whether an arrest was made at school regarding this incident.

I probably did not notify the Committee because the main event (shoplifting) for which an arrest would have been made did not involve the school.  I do, however, see your point.  So, I will notify the entire Committee when an arrest for a school-related incident is made on school property.

[EDITOR’S NOTE]

The Superintendent still has not provided me with a number of times that the police were called to the school.  He has provided a list of arrests – after Officer Vaughn, while speaking to the board about renewing his contract, mentioned that we had 108 arrests over the last two years.  This prompted another email from me to Ricci

Barry,

I have to say I was shocked at the number of arrests at Chariho.  When my wife found out she proclaimed that our kids will never go to that main campus.  I feel other parents may have the same reaction. We should talk about this and find a solution.

Please notify me when an arrest occurs at Chariho.  I'll look around and see what solutions I find in other districts.

The entire Committee will be notified when I am aware of an arrest of a Chariho student for a school-related offense.

Is this a refusal to give me notification when an arrest takes place at Chariho?

I do not care if it is a student or, in your opinion, school-related.  I would like to be notified when an arrest takes place at Chariho.

Then please notify me when an arrest occurs at Chariho - no qualifiers of student status or incident.

I will provide you with the same information provided to the rest of the Committee.  I have already stated that I will provide the Committee with any knowledge I have of arrests.  Because my information comes from building leaders, and not the Richmond Police Department, my information is typically related to school matters.

As an example, two of the arrests reported by Officer Vaughn had no relation to Chariho schools.  Two adults were arrested during a weekend while on the Chariho campus.  I had no knowledge of these arrests.

I would suggest that if an arrest happens on campus, you should be aware of it.

Honestly, I don't care what you give to the committee.  I am asking to be notified if an arrest takes place on the campus.  I don't care who was involved or what the incident was.

Also, have Thornton review the Duke study on grade configuration and give a presentation to the board, if not at the next meeting, the one after that.

[EDITOR’S NOTE]

This is the email chain that Andrew McQuade was looking at when he said I ask too many questions and for now on, I must get board approval before asking for information.

At this point I will just repeat that on July 20th I asked for a list of when the police were called to the campus.  I have yet to receive that from Superintendent Ricci.  I have recently received it from someone else.
