DEATH MATCH-the Fourth Grenadiers vs. the murdering Cossacks! Like slow white ghosts, dim shapes filtered out of the howling gloom of the snowstorm. German southern command is crumbling, the so-called "Iron Division" reduced to a "Wandering Pocket" in retreat from the Red Army. The Fourth Grenadiers are cut off 500 kilometres from the German front, tortured by the killing cold of winter 1942. For leaders of regiments, the greater glory of the German Wehrmacht is at stake. For devious individuals like "Ami" "Polack" and Carstens, it simply means soldiering on. Trapped by the system, pinned down by the pitiless blizzards, they're rebel soldiers with nowhere to run!

February 1944. Whrmacht Punishment Camp Zero One, and Leo Kessler's three reluctant soldiers of the Third Reich are among the inmates being trained for death in the front line. Unfairly court-martialled and ranked with deserters and the lowest of the low from the German army, they determine to achieve the first successful escape bid from 'Camp Death'. Set upon outwitting the sub-zero temperature of the surrounding Russian steppe as much as the attentions of their gaolers Karl Carlstens, 'Ami' and 'Polack' face an epic journey from the moment they first activate their plan for freedom. For the acres of Russian territory which surround the prison camp are virtually controlled by partisans blood-thirsty enough to kill anything German on sight. Beyond which, if they ever succeed in crossing into the Reich, lie the security ranks of Reichsfuhrer SS, Himmler's police network, and Kriminalrat Hans Meissner.
'Wanted for desertion, suspected murder and probable collaboration with the enemy in Russia.' With the whole might of Nazi Germany ranged against them, the fugitive trio are ready to claim help from any possible quarter, however unseen. And as Hamburg burns under a great British air offensive, their flight to the homeland shows the other side of the glorious German Army.
