Burrillville Memories - A Year 2000 Celebration

Message from the Producers

This video is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work in a 9 month period.  During that time we researched every book written on the town and read the entire oral history project by the Burrillville Historical and Preservation Society.  We also visited most of the old mill sites and hiked along the rivers.  To get some of the scenes in the tape, we had to travel by canoe.  Luckily we did this in June before the drought made the rivers impassable.

People were very helpful and gave directions on how to find certain places in town.  With our camera in a backpack, we set off into the woods many times through the thickets, the briers and poison ivy.

We interviewed over a dozen people.  One of the interviews required us to travel to New Brunswick to visit an ex-Burrillville resident.

When the research was done and the information was gathered, we wrote a 50 page script telling the story of the town’s history. We also had over 10 hours of videotape to go through, along with 700 pictures to merge together to make the story come alive.   This video is not meant to be a complete history but rather a story of Burrillville’s heritage.  It is a journey through the villages in the past with references to the present.

Originally the tape was supposed to be an hour but as we gathered information, we realized that the story couldn’t be told in that amount of time, so we lengthened it.

Creating this video has been more work than anybody can hope to imagine, but it has also been a very rewarding experience.  Being born and raised in this area we thought we knew a lot about the town, but there was so much more to learn.  As we enter the new millennium, there will be new Burrillville Memories to add to the old.  We truly came to realize the importance of  preserving and protecting our heritage whether it be in the form of pictures, stories, written records, historical buildings or old cemeteries.  Let’s hope that the spirit of the past is never forgotten!
