A properly sized ring is comfortable to wear. Not too tight, not
too loose, both of which have their drawbacks.
Properly sizing a ring take a little time and some care. Just putting a
ring gauge on your finger isn't the quick solution it sounds like it should be.
A ring is light, narrow, and the older ones are not round. Most ring
gauges with all the possible sizes in one large group can weight too much and
change what size is for you. Some light weight & simple ring gauges are
small, but wide. This can lead to the wrong size selected if you are not
looking at wide rings. And the last complication is that fingers are not
round, nor is your knuckle.
All these aspects can effect your sizing, and why a proper fitting must be
performed by a knowledgeable person. A properly sized ring will also sit
better on the finger and have less chance of rotating around your finger during
the day.

Capabilities
Resize
Did you know heat can make a stone change color, or even shatter.
Resizing a ring takes experience to do it correctly. Depending on
the ring and the stone in the ring, there are different concerns or
risks involved. Only an experienced Jeweler knows what can be done
in each situation, which is why with over 30 years experience at
Howell's Opal Shoppe you know your ring will be resized properly.
Stretching
Did you know there is a limit to how much metal can be stretched,
before it becomes to brittle to wear. For minute increases in
size, and depending on the ring, this can be a cheaper alternative to
resizing. We have the experience to know when, and more
importantly, when not to stretch a ring. Improper stretching could
lead to the ring breaking or even the loss of the ring.
Beads
Small beads of metal, when properly placed and sized, can help with
both sizing and making the ring sit better on the finger. In most
cases the wearer doesn't even know they are there.
Ring Removal (non emergency)
For that ring that just will not come off, there are many techniques
that can be used to remove the ring. We have years of experience
on what different techniques can be used to coax off the ring. As
a last resort we can cut the ring.
*Please keep in mind that for any emergency type situations that you
see a doctor.
Ring Size Guide
This is a good last tool available should you not know the size and
wish to not let the other person know you are getting a ring. Or
coming into the store is too difficult. We have this guild on the
back of our business cards, so if you can stop buy and pick one up, you
will not have any computer print outs to deal with.
To use the guide, just cut out along the lines and slide into a
ring. Do not bend or force the guide into the ring.
If you wish to print out the image, then make sure the English or
metric scales are correct prior to determining ring size. If you
can not print on a heavy paper stock, at least fold over the paper to
double it's thickness prior to cutting. The image is sized
correctly, but some software resizes the image. The actual width
of the guide should be 6.85". You also must cut the guide in half,
where the black line is. You can also request a better image
directly from us via Email, and we can
also place it in a MS Word file that should print out without any
concerns.
