Robert and Vivian Zehr’s Cruise to Alaska
  May 31-June 10, 2000

This cruise to Alaska was a gift to us on the occasion of my retirement after 23 years of pastoral ministry at the Des Allemands Mennonite Church.

Our son, Michael joined us for a few days in Vancouver before the cruise began.  We toured the city and went to Vancouver Island on a ferry.  The trip across was about an hour and 45 minutes long.  This is Vivian and Michael on the ferry and later in Buschart Gardens on the island.

Michael treated us to High Tea at the world famous Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C.

Another garden scene at Buschart Gardens,

Vivian fakes a bite from a wild boar.  Notice how bright his snout is after gillions of tourists have rubbed the brass for luck

On board the ship we were seated at the early dining room setting.  There were six persons at our table.  What a delight to make new friends.  This is Vivian and myself immediately to the left of the wild boar picture.

Ed and Becky MCnair are from New Mexico.  They are both retired, enjoying life in sunny the Southwest.
Sylvia Perkins and her daughter, Lisa Hart, are from Oklahoma.
We found ourselves looking forward to the evening meals.  The fellowship around the table complemented the food, service and the panoramic view from the windows in the spacious dining room.

I think that this is a view of Juneau from the lift which is operated by Native Americans.  The ride to the top 1800 feet above the valley's floor is breathtaking. One can almost reach out and touch the eagles soaring past.
Celebrity's Mercury is a huge ship with all the amenities of home plus many more.  This was our home for seven days on the inside passage from Vancouver to Seward.

This is a typical sight on the road from Seward to Anchorage.  We saw moose and mountain goats and sheep along the way.

I am standing high above the valley floor  No, I did not climb or fly here.  I came by cable lift.

The Mercury is in the background as Vivian poses after a strenuous "shopping spree."

An iceberg floats just at the edge of Portage Glacier.  Nine tenths of it is underwater!

Two more scenes from Portage Bay.

The glacier is reflected perfectly in the cold icy water.

Vivian stands beside the "World's Largest Rhubarb."

Native Americans carve a Totem Pole.
