Boy Alloy is an industrial metal ensemble based in Southern California. It began in 1985 as an offshoot of the Rhythm Collective of the University of California, San Diego, which sponsored Friday drum jams. Revolutionary elements of the Rhythm Collective were not content with "touchy-feely" hand drumming, and so pushed the timbral boundaries of the Friday drum jams to include the clang, the grate, and the smash. These sounds better expressed their self-appointed role of laboratory primates rattling gilded cages, while trying to organize sheep atop an ivory tower. Skin and wood were too organic to placate their weltschmerz. Metal was the response. San Diego foundries provided inexpensive supplies of scrap pieces of resonant steel. And in this forge of rage and tinnitus was tempered the aesthetic of Boy Alloy.
