greetings, edward!

i couldn't resist all the celtic references, and i was especially excited that you recognized where the scottish pix were from - very cool!  all the ones that are not local are from scotland, ireland, and canada.  the newspaper clipping of me competing is from ontario, actually - i really wanted to go to the fergus games in ontario because my grandmother was a ferguson.  i compete in a dress ferguson tartan kilt in her honor.

also couldn't resist the burns reference - as you might expect from a british and irish lit teacher, i adore burns.  well, his poetry, at least - his personal life was a bit feckless!  even managed to work burns into my thesis on james joyce!  i've scoured the burns trail several times.  have also been to stirling several times to visit bannockburn, stirling castle, and the wallace monument (spectacular!).  one summer i took scottish step dancing classes at stirling university.  so what is your last name?

so when and why did you get divorced?  i know that is a personal question, and i don't want to be rude or insensitive.  but it does make a difference to me in terms of getting to know you better.  where does your ex live now?  what are your daughters' names?  where are you from originally?  where did you do your degrees?  what did you do your PhD in?  how do you like teaching?

ok, i'll give it a rest with the questions!  ;)  write back when you get a chance.  i need to get moving here - tomorrow is going to come all too quickly for me!!!

Hello:

I read and saw your profile today, and was very impressed.
First of all, I can't decide which photograph I like best - the
one standing next to the 18th at St. Andew's, or the one
on the "bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond". In fact,
my father and I just got back from a tour of Scotland, and
of course we visited both of these places, among many
others. It was his first visit there, and it was a very moving
experience for him.

I am of Scottish and Irish heritage. My ancestors moved to
Canada in the early 19th century, and settled in Southeastern
Ontario. In Scotland, they came from county Stirlingshire (my
last name is a district there). My biggest claim to infamy is that
one of my ancestor's was a co-owner of one of the first
publishing firms that Robbie Burns approached (in Glasgow)
to try to get some of his poetry published. Alas, they turned
him down.

I am a scientist (professor and researcher) by training
(please don't run away, I won't bite), but I have a strong
artistic side as well. I sing in a
number of choirs, as do my daughters (9 year old twin girls).
Music has always been a big part of my life. I put in my
profile that my favourite music is Celtic!!
I really mean that. Of the UK groups, the Chieftains are my
favourite (and yes, I liked them before they got popular). But
perhaps my strongest connection is with the Eastern Canadian
Celtic music scene. I have enjoyed the Rankins for many years;
I also really like the newer stuff - Great Big Sea, Natalie McMasters, Aselin Debison, and on and on. Oh, and I grew up with the
REALLY old stuff, and appreciate that too.

Anyway, I hope that you will take the time to look at my profile.

Looking forward to hearing from you ...

Cheers,
Edward.
