The house is just a minute's walk from one of the Atlantic Coast's most pristine beaches, protected from overdevelopment by being sandwiched between four near-wilderness areas - the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge and North Carolina Estuarine Research Preserve to the south, and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park to the north, just over the Virginia/North Carolina state line.

Break'n Wind is a three bedroom beachhouse having a complete kitchen, large living and dining area,

and a wrap around deck with hot tub. Two of the beds are queens, one is a double, and the downstairs sofa opens to a queen bed as well. Unlike some of those backbreakers you may have tried, this one sleeps nicely. The three bedrooms are shown below.

Driving Directions

Here is a list of what you need to bring, as well as the things we will have provided for your stay.

As would be expected from the area's name, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is a must for access to these beaches. The house is a 7 mile drive on the sand along the surf line from where North Carolina Route 12 ends just north of the Corolla Lighthouse.

From the end of Route 12, simply put your car into 4-wheel drive, cross through the cut in the dunes, and head north into the little remaining bit of paradise of this type left on the Atlantic Coast.

paradise

Part of "paradise" is the existence on this beach of the only remaining herd of wild horses (~60 to 70) left on the Atlantic Coast that is free to roam in residential areas. The horses on Ocracoke are penned, while those on the rest of the Atlantic seaboard are kept in national parks, where you can visit, but not live.

The horses will tolerate your presence if you are not too close, but you should not approach or let your dog harass them. This is illegal, and stallions are much bigger than dogs.

So come on down, bring a good book (bring two good books), feel the beach breeze drifting through your hair, and enjoy the most peaceful vacation available this side of the grave.

Tides

With the absence of paved roads, life on the North Beaches is married to the tides. Tide tables for Corolla and the North Beaches are available here.

Just click the "Currituck Beach Light" button and fill in the form at the bottom of the page for your dates of interest. In addition to tide high and low times, the anticipated tide height above mean low water is also given.
