Lassen, Burney Falls, Lava Beds, Crater Lake and Redwoods, July 2003

Our vacation this summer was a 10 day road trip in the motorhome to Northern California and Oregon. We departed Ramona and headed through the LA traffic up I-5 all the way to Sacramento for our first night. The next morning we visited the very excellent California State Railroad Museum and historic old town Sacramento.

We got to check out the dining car.

Each rail line had a unique set of special china tableware.

Alicia works the boiler for Big Boy, the last of the large cab forward steam locomotives.

Alex works the throttle.

The locomotive “Empire”.

Alicia and Marissa try to out run this Santa Fe streamliner.

Saying good bye to Sacramento from the back of the caboose! On to our next stop, Mt. Lassen.

We headed north into the mountains to visit Lassen Volcanic National Park. Mt. Lassen last erupted in 1915. As we drove around the mountain you could still see much of the devastation. Still lots of snow everywhere, and several of the lakes at the higher elevations were still frozen over with ice. We stayed at the Manzanita Lake campground that night, and visited the park's Loomis Museum on our way out the next morning.

We stopped to play in the huge drifts of snow.

Christine, Marissa and Alicia pose on one of the many large rocks that shot out of the volcano.

The Devastated Area trail explains what happened here when the volcano erupted.

Marissa and Alex check out the Loomis Hot Rock. This rock was expelled from the volcano and was still steaming hot 3 days later when it was photographed by Loomis.

At the Loomis Museum and Visitor Center.
