Sports Science Associates (SSA) is a group of sports-science professionals from around the world who are dedicated to providing expert useful sports-science support for exceptional athletes and teams. It responds to the wishes of head coaches and program managers to provide valid, reliable, accurate, and worthwhile scientific testing and consultations.

SSA recognizes that most academic institutions do not have adequate expertise in the science of the elite athlete. Consequently, SSA locates expert individuals, determined in consultation with the sporting organization officials, and recruits them to provide the highest possible level of consultation and athlete evaluation.

SSA is dedicated to working with head coaches and sport organizations to develop the most effective scientific support programs to fit their needs.

TYPES OF COURSES

The types of courses offered by SSA are as follows.

  1. SSA courses for certificates are the same experiences as those that were given at San Diego State University for university credit. However, they do not earn university credit because SSA cannot give university credit. The costs of SSA courses also include course materials. This option is provided to accommodate individuals who need to have certified continuing education units to maintain professional standing.
  2. If the purpose behind a course is self-improvement and discovery, and neither university credits nor certificates are required by the student, then simply purchasing the materials alone is the cheapest option.

BETTER COACHING FROM BETTER DECISIONS
[ TOOLS TO INCREASE COACHING EFFECTIVENESS ]

Coaching effectiveness is largely affected by the quality of decisions made to accommodate the needs of individuals. Observing individuals within a group to discern important symptoms of training responses and behavioral trends, needs, and variations is usually unreliable, inaccurate, and incomplete. This workshop describes practical and accurate assessment tools that can be used in training and competitive settings without appreciably increasing the workload of the coach. They are designed to provide reliable coach-usable information that should influence program and interactional decisions concerning individual athletes. Employing these devices is proposed as a means of increasing the capability and effectiveness of coaches.

Most of the assessment tools have been developed by Dr. Rushall and his colleagues and cover the following areas.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM COACHES

Modern coaching theory is becoming increasingly complex. New sport science revelations and practices by elite sporting nations indicate that coaching programs have to be up-to-date to be effective. This workshop describes seven principles for coaching advanced athletes, the features that underlie effective coaching systems, and coaching behaviors that indicate a degradation of coaching effort and effectiveness. Participants should gain an understanding of what needs to be done to produce maximized performances in athletes through coaching effectiveness.

CONFIDENTIAL SUPPORT SERVICES FOR ELITE ATHLETES
[Player Agents and General Managers Only Please]

Sport science services take many forms, most determined by the needs of an organization. In recognition of the fact that some sciences become less important the higher the performance level of the athlete, SSA often suggests services that previously have not been contemplated. The confidentiality of services is according to the ethical standards of the American Psychological Association. Some examples of services are listed below.

PERFORMANCE/BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION PROGRAMS

Consultations and behavior modification programs are often conducted across the internet using video and voice communications. Programs consider the total sporting experience including psychology, biomechanics, and physiology. They are available to anyone in any location with appropriate computer facilities.

For athletes:

For coaches:

Sport Programs:

IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECTS

Evaluations appropriate to project; further modifications; transfer to self- or natural control, transfer to competition settings.

ON-SITE INVOLVEMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Competition preparations and monitoring (pre-competition monitoring and direction; measurement of appropriate factors, e.g., stress, pressure, symptoms), interventions, crisis management, coach and athlete monitoring

EXCLUSIVE ELITE ATHLETE PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING

SSA only uses scientifically established sport-specific psychological tests. It has been shown that situation-specific tests are more reliable, valid, and accurate than tests that consider unrelated situations outside of the elite sporting arena. Sport psychology tests that are available through SSA's services are as follows:

Any sport can be tested with a selection of these tests to produce immediate understandable results. The standard elite athlete testing package comprises an appropriate set of behavioral/psychological inventories, the SIES, AMSSE, and SSCS. Confidentially and the ethics of psychological testing and consultations are strictly observed.

The sport psychology testing capabilities of SSA are used by elite athlete academies, institutes, and professionals throughout the world. Testing for particular national and professional sporting organizations is conducted in 16 countries.

CONDITIONING AND MODERN TRAINING THEORY

Planning periodized programs, monitoring of training responses, measurement of overtraining, maximization of the training response, most recent research findings.

EDUCATION

Workshops, lectures, and educational experiences can be provided for athletes, coaches, officials, parents, and the media. A catalog of workshops is available online.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

POSITIVE DRUG TEST ADVISORY GROUP
[Legal Representatives, Player Agents, and General Managers Only Please]

Sports Science Associates co-ordinates an international group of drug-testing experts. These individuals are available for consultation regarding defending against positive drug tests. Group members are not lawyers, but senior scientists and experts in the field of drug testing in sports. This group performs an advisory and research function for legal representatives of “charged” athletes. The accumulated knowledge of this group provides a formidable resource to combat the injustices of many positive drug test results. Although not against drug testing to catch actual drug cheats, the group is decidedly against the public demonisation of innocent or unwitting individuals resulting from a very imperfect drugs-in-sport inquisition.

The strictest confidentiality is ensured.
