"An artist's work is an extension of himself. To understand the nature of the artist's work, one should understand the nature of the artist." (Page 1)This Retrospective is provided so that one can get to know her and her work better.
"I hope to convey my creative approach to the "formal" structures of painting, as well as the inner compulsion which imperitively determines the formal. In this way, I hope to give the reader a better understanding of how my paintings grew and evolved. (Page 2)
The reader of this Retrospective can only come to one conclusion, ergo, what a gifted, talented, and comsummate artist she was, being able to paint in so many different media.
"Color becomes significant only when it becomes form. The paintings for this thesis are primarily concerned with showing how color acts as an organizing structural element in building form." (Page 5)
Shayna was an expert in using colors.
"In this painting, refering to 1776, I created a problem for myself by using the combination of red and green colors, which were diametrically opposed to each other. Determined to make the two colors 'work', I decided to make a color sketch over a period of two of three days, with no results." (Page 15)
The reader will see in "1776" that the two colors did work, and created the action and reaction that she sought.
