This page is for the new PocketPC owner who isn't sure where to start looking for things that make PPC's rock. I added this page to my site because it took me months to get even the basic PPC programs when I first got my iPaq. This is the basic information I give to new PPC users I meet around town.
Sources of information:>
PocketPCPassion is one of the most popular PPC news site out there. Dale Coffing, the site's creator, is always given the latest information in PPC and handheld news. He makes great time delivering that information to the masses. On top of that, he's a great guy.>
Brighthand is the most informative, forum based, PPC site there is. This site is visited by some of the smartest and most informed PPC experts out there. Like most communities, online and in real life, it's seen some hard times. But it has proven on more than one occasion that it has what is needed to survive.
Essential (free) programs:
AvantGo is one of your most important applications!!! I am still kick myself knowing that I went almost 4 months of using my iPaq without this. This is a free service. First, sign up and load the information to your PPC. Next, choose from their list of PPC friendly web sites, all made to fit your screen, or add your own personal site. They include, Yahoo, The New York Times, Maxim online, and several other worthy web sites. After that, whenever you sync your iPaq while you're online, it will go out on the internet, find the updated pages, and save them on your iPaq. Updated news, movie show times (through yahoo), stories to cut and paste as email to my wife, Sony news, PPC news, and that's only one of the 3 "servers" (sections) I sync daily. This is the only thing keeping me from blowing $600 on that wireless GSM sleeve that's about to be released.
Flashenabled is an interesting place. Go here, download the free flash program, then check out the archive. Great stuff. Especially for showing off the power of your PPC to your friends. If nothing else, you have to get the karate one.
PocketTV is basically what it says. It lets you play video clips on your PPC. Pretty simple. Load the program, make sure your Mpeg files are somewhere in "My Documents" on your PPC, then watch movie, clip, music video, etc.
NoteM is a small program that records and turns those recordings into mp3's. This program is a must have for students.
BatMemTime is a program that gives you everything you need to know about your iPaq in one block on your screen. I find the battery monitor especially useful throughout the day.
Where's My RAM is a simple program that let's you know which folders are holding how much information. It's very good for locating and deleting large files that sneak up on you.
Total Commander is a complete file manipulation program. I provides a better looking interface than the one included with all PPC software.
