What Animals Are Lurking in Your Backyards?

Multi-Level students will communicate via the Internet  animals that are lurking in their backyards or school grounds.

        Knows the common and distinguishing characteristics of groups of vertebrate animals (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians)

Knows that the size of a population is dependent upon the available resources within its community.

Knows that to compare and contrast observations and results is an essential skill in science.

        Knows that a model of something is different from the real thing, but can be used to learn something about the real thing.

        Selects and uses a variety of appropriate reference materials, including multiple representations of information, such as maps, charts, and photos, to gather information for research projects.

Instructional Goal: 

Students will be able to compare and contrast the different animals.

Students will be able to email, illustrate, and collaborate with other students about their animals.

Introductory Activity:

         Animals are found in all locations of the world in every part of the land, which includes rainforest, desert, mountains, plains, and even in the freshwaters. They are found from the Arctic and Antarctic to the equator.  They are found on every continent and on every island.   They are found in rural areas, suburbs, large cities, and small towns.  Where will you find the animals lurking?  Are the animals lurking on and under the ground, trees, bushes, flowers?   Investigate and collaborate your findings with Mrs. Bush’s Third Grade Class.

Internet Resources

Activities:

1.  Select an area  around your backyard or schoolyard. 

2.  Draw a map of the area where you located the animal.

3.  Investigate, name, and identify the animal. 

4.  Describe the animal. (Name, size, color, unique characteristic)

5.  Take a photos of the animal. 

6.  Email the photo and the information about the animal to:  Mrs. Bush at: bushtwo@cox.net

7.  Using the Internet send a j-peg of the animals that are lurking in your backyard.  These will be posted at:  http://members.cox.net/bushtwo/index.htm

Then you can compare your findings with Mrs. Bush’s Class. 

Culminating Activity:

Send the photo (j-peg), a description of the animal:  name, size, color, and a unique characteristic about the animal,  and the location (city, town, suburb, and state) to Mrs. Bush to place on the class website: Bush's Bulldogs
