ESTABLISHMENT

Lion Burgess Field, State Secretary, met with several members of the Manhattan Lions Club that were interested in forming a second Lions Club in Manhattan because their travel schedules made it difficult for them to attend evening meetings of the Manhattan Lions Club. Another reason for an interest in forming a second club was that some Lions and potential Lions wanted to belong to a smaller club than the evening club. It was decided after several discussions to form a second club that would meet at the Wareham Hotel at 6:30 a.m. the first, second, and fourth Mondays of each month with the directors meeting the third Monday.

The club was officially formed on October 9, 1967 with 13 members present. The sponsoring club was the Manhattan Lions Club. Temporary officers were Lions Bill Justus, President, and Earl Dreher, Secretary-Treasurer. Lions present at the first meeting were Al Adams, Burgess A. Field (State Secretary), Earl Dreher, Cleatus Grace, Max Heim, Bill Just, Bill Justus, Leo Lake, Palmer Lindsay, John Noordsy, Fran Schneiders, Jim Strohm, and W.R. Thomas, District Governor.

The Charter Night was held on January 8, 1968 with 176 people present at the banquet. Lion Claude DeVorss, Past International President, was Master of Ceremonies and Lion R.B. Laing, Past International Director, gave the Charter Address. Thirty-three Lions were listed as charter members.
