The hose cart below was pulled by volunteer firefighters in Manhattan in the late 19th century. It was used for firefighting and in parades with the last known picture of it in 1886.
With the advent of horse drawn equipment the hose cart was eventually replaced finally ending up in a landfill. The cart was rescued and returned to the Department. It was stored there for many years but was in an extreme stage of disrepair.
The cart was rebuilt by fourth generation wheelwright David Suhling. Mr. Suhling is an expert woodworker and avid tool collector and had worked for many years at Silver Dollar City.
The restoration was financed by the Manhattan Sunflower Lions Club. Fire Department members contributed to the restoration efforts by completing the finish work on the cart.

On October 28, 2002 Sunflower Lions Club President Leland Elliott and Treasurer Daryl Buchholz presented the keys to a new Polaris Ranger 4x4 utility vehicle to Manhattan Fire Chief Jim Woydziak.
This vehicle has been modified by the Department to provide limited fire suppression capability in areas that are inaccessible to larger apparatus and where its use is more cost effective.
The Department intends on using the Ranger at various events such as Kansas State Football games and provides a means to transport heavy equipment into hard to reach locations.
The purchase of this vehicle was made possible by the efforts of many organizations and individuals who have contributed to the Old Engine 1 fund. The Modern Woodmen of America insurance company made a significant donation that made the purchase of the Ranger possible this year.
The Old Engine 1 fund was originally established by the Sunflower Lions to pay for the restoration of Old Engine 1 for use in fire prevention education. Old Engine 1 is a 1947 open cab American LaFrance fire engine. The continued contributions to the fund have allowed it to be used for the restoration of an original 125-year-old hose cart and other fire prevention activities. These activities continue the Lions Club over 50-year tradition of involvement with the Manhattan Fire Department.
