Following are
the 2004 team stats.
Below, you will find the offensive
and defensive stats. I have tried to briefly explain what each stat
means and tried to clear up some misconceptions about each one. Again,
let me emphasize THESE ARE NOT OFFICIAL.
This is simply my view of the game.

- G
= games played;
- PA = plate appearances. This is the total
number of times the Tigers have come to the plate;
- AB = at bats. An official at bat is one in
which the player either hits safely, reaches on an error, or is put
out. Walks and being hit by a pitch do
not count as an at bat;
- H
= hits. The number of times the Tigers reach base because of a SAFE
hit.
ERRORS DO NOT COUNT AS HITS. If a batter reaches base because of
an
error, it counts as an out as far as his stats are concerned;
- BB = walks. Walks do not count for or
against a player in computing his batting average;
- HBP = hit by pitch. Being hit by a
pitch does not count for or against a player in computing his batting
average;
- ROE = reached on error. If a player reaches
base on an error, it still counts as an at bat and he does not get
credit for a hit in his stats;
- FC = fielders choice. A fielders choice
occurs when another player is
put out because of a hit ball by the batter but the batter reaches
base. A fielders choice hit counts against the batter in his stats.
That is, he
gets credit for an at bat, but not for reaching safely;
- AVG = batting average. Batting average is
simply hits divided by at bats;
- OB% = on base percentage. The on base
percentage is the percentage of times the batter reaches base, whether
it is by error, fielders choice, hit,
walk, hit by pitch, interference. It is computed by dividing the
number of times he reaches base by the number of times he went to the
plate;
- SAC = sacrifice. A sacrifice is when a
player intentionally makes an out to advance a runner;
- 2B = doubles. A double is when a runner
reaches 2nd base because of his hit ball, not because the fielders
messed up;
- 3B = triples. Same as 2B;
- HR = home runs;
- K
= strikeouts;
- SB = stolen bases. It does not count as a
stolen base if a player breaks after the ball gets away from the
catcher; R = runs.

- IP = innings pitched;
- R
= runs allowed;
- ER = earned runs. Runs are earned if they
are not a direct result of defensive errors. Even if it is an error by
the pitcher;
- K
= strikeouts;
- BB = walks;
- HB = hit batters;
- BF = batters faced;
- AB = at bats. An official at bat does not
include walks or being hit by a pitch;
- H
= hits. That is, safe hits, not errors;
- OBA = opposing team batting average;
- DE = defensive errors;
- ERA = earned run average. The earned run
average is simply the number of earned runs scored per inning times 7.
