Donald T. (Ted) Crump
July 28, 1939 - March 29, 2008

Donald T. (Ted) Crump was born in McCammon, Idaho, on July 28, 1939, to the late Leon “Leo” Easthope Crump and Hilda Rose Green Crump. He passed away after a long battle with Carcinoid Cancer on March 29, 2008, with his devoted wife Natasha at his side, as she was throughout his illness.

He was a graduate of Idaho State University (B.A., Political Science), the U.S. Army Defense Language Institute (Russian language), and the University of Utah (M.A., Russian), and worked in all the Slavic and Germanic languages (except Icelandic).

Ted was the head of the Translation Office at the National Institutes of Health, where he had worked for over 25 years. He was a life and honorary member of the American Translators Association. He served on the ATA Board of Directors and edited Capital Translator and the ATA Chronicle. He was the author of Translations in the Federal Government 1985 and Translation and Interpretation in the Federal Government (ATA, 2002).

His cartoon series "Great Moments in Languages" appeared in the Capital Translator for over two decades.

A music lover all of his life, he was a bass-baritone singer and appeared in a recital June 10, 2005 in collaboration with the soprano Deborah Sternberg presenting art songs and arias in several languages. He was a member of the Rosebud Musical Theater Co. and with it sung for nursing homes as well as various theatrical presentations. In addition he was a member of the River Road Unitarian Church Chior for many years. His favorite kind of music was classical opera and he has sung many pieces from great composers such as Mozart, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsokov and others. One of his last performances included the Faure-Requiem, the first movement of which is playing as you read this page.

He leaves behind his wife Natasha; three sisters; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and a host of friends.

The memorial service will be held Saturday, April 19th at Joseph Gawler's Sons, Inc. Funeral home at 5130 Wisconsin Ave. N.W., Washington,D.C. 20016 (Tel: 202-966-6400). The family will receive friends at 10:30am, and the memorial service will start at 11:00am. The interment will be at 2pm at Parklawn Memorial Park and Menorah Gardens - 12800 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, Md 20853 (Tel:301-8812151).
